VIDEO: Preserving Black History In New York City

Because knowing Black history is a way to know a fuller American history.

I don’t take it as a given that people automatically want to hear anything I have to say. So it was an honor when Andy Bachman, the executive director of JCP Downtown, reached out to see if I’d be interested in being interviewed for a Black History Month program that was being developed by NYC First Lady Chirlane McCray. The video also includes Shawne’ Lee, who successfully rallied support to get 227 Duffield Street in Brooklyn landmarked as an Underground Railroad site, and noted historian Eric Foner.

The animating question was, “Why is it important to preserve Black history?” Answer: Because it’s a way to know a fuller American history.
