Yesterday, I pressed send on the first issue of my new newsletter, The Black Fantastic, which focuses on contemporary culture, particularly the Black artists, activists, scholars and creators who are driving it forward. I’m also interested in the expansion of our collective imagination, from understanding the moment we’re living through to envisioning what could be on the other side of it.
Why now? Not only do I miss the act and process of curating, I feel strongly that my point of view on what’s happening in the world is valuable. To be honest, I also enjoy imposing my tastes on everyone… 🙂 Seriously, it’s an extension and continuation of the work I’ve been doing throughout my career and in this space. In the newsletter’s introduction, I wrote:
So, this newsletter braids together a few threads of personal interest: It picks up where the decade-long run of Bold As Love Magazine left off: Highlighting what’s new and notable in contemporary culture–with an emphasis on the the Black artists, activists, scholars and creators who are driving it forward. Also, I’m bringing forward the perspective I’ve gained from a career in marketing, being a cultural worker, a dot connector, and lately, as someone who’s turned around a 50-year-old Black cultural institution. All that informs what you’ll see over the course of this publication, either through my own writing or through highlighting the work of others.
For the time being, I’m committing to every other week, which means the next edition will come out on October 25. If you’re not on the mailing list, check out the first issue here and consider subscribing.
