On keeping it moving and staying open to possibilities.

Back in July, I’d gotten to the finals of yet another search only to be told by the recruiter that the search committee decided not to select me or the other finalist. Now, I understand that this happens in searches: The process often uncovers things the committee hadn’t considered about their organization, which calls for a reevaluation of the selection criteria.  Be that as it may, that’s four months I’ll never get back.

I was frustrated by this whole process of waiting to be chosen.  Then I realized that for over 30 years, I’ve grown institutions, platformed artists, championed ideas, and invested in–and been supported by–an incredible community. And while there are some advantages of a job-job, I don’t need to be the director of someone’s institution to continue doing those things.

So, I’m leaning into life as a consultant. I’m focusing on two areas: The first is brand-building.  That is, helping nonprofit organizations stand out in a crowded marketplace by connecting their audiences, products and programs, community engagement, and their marketing.  Second—and thanks to the suggestion of a gallerist—I’m helping people build their art collections as an art advisor. Yes, there’s a bit of a learning curve here, but it ain’t brain surgery or rocket science, and I have a lot of resources to help me figure it out.

Travel earlier this year to Paris and Martha’s Vineyard reminded me that there’s a big world out there.  It made me wonder if the best way for me to experience it is from behind the desk of someone else’s organization.  For now, that answer is no.

Onward, y’all!
